It's Christmas Eve - time to hang your stockings and wait for Santa Claus! Have you ever wondered how Christmas traditions like filling stockings began? Here are a few Christmas traditions explained:
Stockings - Legend has it that Santa Claus once dropped some gold coins while coming down the chimney. The coins would have been lost if they hadn't landed in a stocking that had been hung by the fire to dry. Since that time, children have hung stockings in hopes that Santa Clause will fill them with gifts.
Candy Canes - The tradition of candy canes at Christmas time originated in Cologne, Germany. In about 1670, the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral had sticks of candy bent into the shape of a shepherd's crook and passed them out to children who attended the Christmas pageants.
Mistletoe - The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe comes from England. The original custom was that a berry was picked from the sprig of mistletoe before each kiss. When all the berries were gone there could be no more kissing!
Presents - The Christmas gift-giving tradition has its roots in the Three Kings' offerings to the infant Jesus. The three magi traveled to Bethlehem to present their gifts. Some countries still celebrate the traditional date of the magi's arrival on January 6th (also called Three Kings' Day or Epiphany) with a Christmas-like exchange of gifts.
Some families create their own Christmas traditions like opening one present on Christmas Eve. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
