...Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom opened!

The "Grand Opening" celebration took place over three weeks later, on October 25, 1971.

And to add even more Disney trivia, October 1st is also the birthday of Mary Poppins herself, Julie Andrews. The lovely Miss Andrews turns 74 today.
